The UHAI Collection
Perfectly Imperfect,
Perfectly Alive
The small differences in a handmade piece are not flaws. They are proof that a person made it. Here is what that means for the UHAI Collection and why it feels alive.
AfroWema Journal · Nairobi
Three fades, drifting. No hand-dyed hem ever lands in the same place twice.
Look closely at a piece from the UHAI Collection and you may notice something: no two are exactly alike.
That is on purpose. UHAI means life in Swahili, and nothing alive is perfectly symmetrical. The slight differences in a handmade piece are what make it feel like it has a pulse.
The Moment
Why imperfection is
having a moment.
At Paris Fashion Week this season, one of the biggest fashion houses in the world built its show around the idea that what looks symmetrical in nature is often not quite. Street style in the city told the same story, with people pairing new pieces with thrift finds and vintage from their mothers' and grandmothers' wardrobes.
The message is simple. People are tired of clothes that look like they came off a machine. They want pieces with character, and pieces with a story.
We have always made clothes this way.
Four Elements
One collection, four living states.
The Detail
What makes a
UHAI piece alive.
01
The dye
Every fade is applied by hand. The colour pools, deepens and softens differently on each garment, so the hem on your piece sits at a different depth from the one beside it. That variation cannot be scheduled or repeated.
02
The fabric
Dead stock Kenyan cotton, ethically sourced, unworn, and diverted from waste before it reached a dumpsite. The UHAI collection gave life to 60kg of it.
03
The Kitenge
Printed Kitenge insets are cut from limited fabric runs, so the pattern falls in a slightly different place on every piece. The placement is a decision made at the cutting table, not by a machine.
04
The maker
Each piece is handcrafted in Kenya by our tailors from Kibera, including Grace Swalah. The garment you receive was cut, stitched and finished by a named person, in a specific place.
When your UHAI piece looks slightly different from the one beside it on the rail, that is not a defect. It is the proof that a person made it.
How the Fade Is Made
Not a filter. Not a print.
The cloth is lowered into the dye gradually. Whatever stays in longest becomes the deepest. Done by hand, done slowly, it never repeats exactly.

Fire Draped Sleeveless Ombré Vest Set
$375.53
A floor-length sleeveless vest that opens wide at the front, fading from cream into burnt orange at the hem through hand-dyed ombré. A Kitenge inset lines the front edge, visible only at the sides and only in movement. It is the clearest demonstration of what a hand-dyed fade does: the colour lands differently on every single one, so the piece you receive has a gradient that exists nowhere else.

In Practice
How to style a piece
with character.
Let it lead.
Build the outfit around your UHAI piece and keep everything else simple.
Mix old and new.
Pair it with something inherited or secondhand for a look that is entirely yours.
Embrace the texture.
Natural drape and handmade detail are part of the beauty, so there is no need to chase a perfect finish.
Tell its story.
When someone asks where it is from, you have something worth saying.
Made to Be Kept
The best clothes
get handed down.
A piece with a story is a piece people hold on to. The best clothes do not go out of style. They get handed down.
How to care for your UHAI piece
Gently hand wash in cold water with a mild, delicate soap.
Never machine wash or tumble dry.
Wash the Kitenge detailing separately from the hand-dyed cotton, as pigments may softly migrate.
Dry flat in the shade, away from direct sunlight, to protect the richness of the hand-dyed tones.
Perfect is easy to copy.
Alive is not.
Perfectly imperfect.
UHAI means life. Hand-dyed and handcrafted in Kibera, Nairobi. Each piece exists once.
